Shine’s Asian Fusion Bistro Menu

We went yesterday to find they'd really changed up their menu. It definitely looks nicer and is easier to read. I think they have more sushi roll variety, but my husband said they'd stopped carrying some of the hot dishes he used to order (curries?)... Worst news for me -- no more sangria/cocktails! (Though they may make you a saketini if you ask, since that is really just sake shaken w/ice and presented in a martini glass.) All in all, I thought the food was quite good. Cheesecake tempura for dinner was a cheesy but fun way to end the meal; the cake was still a bit frozen in the middle, but I liked the crumbly texture that resulted.

When my wife and I crave sushi, we go the Shine's. We believe it's the best sushi in and around the area. We always get the teriyaki chicken, spider roll, Godzilla roll, and a double happiness roll, which are all amazing. The service has always been alright to us and the prices are fair as well. If you're in eagle river and tempted to get the Fred Meyer sushi because it's convenient...don't, put it back and make a Togo order.

I used to love Shines. The menu has changed. No more coconut soup. The eggplant fries are now eggplant chunks rolled in nori. I don't think I will be back.

Very nice comfortable place. The food was very good and I love being offered something I've never had by the chef. Will definitely be back.

My "go-to" pho and Thai joint in Eagle River is closed on Sunday. I had Asian on the brain, and decided to try Shine's. It didn't seem all that fancy from the outside, just another strip mall restaurant. However, it turned out to be very nice on the inside. A recent renovation was obvious. An insert in the extensive menu heralded the addition of pho to their menu in bold capital letters and triple exclamation points. Just what the doctor ordered. It was buried way in the back, and the choices were beef, chicken, or seafood. I had the beef. Good stuff! The broth was richer and heartier than any other I've had in Alaska. The beef was meat balls, tendon, and two different types of steak. Very generous portions of all. I sense a new "go-to" pho place in my future.

I love Shines! It's close and convenient yet very good! I love the crunchy shrimp roll and the eastern roll. I definitely recommend! I've only ordered takeout here and they have it done and ready within 10-20 min!

Had a fantastic experience here this evening. I can't believe I just found out about this place. It's in a little strip mall and just blends in with the rest but the inside is just wow! Not what you'd expect when you take a glance from the outside. The first thing I noticed was how clean, organized and tastefully decorated this place was. It was not what I expected. I'd say the decor is very modern/contemporary and you can see the Asian fusion. The place feels huge on the inside, with plenty of seating. I felt very comfortable here and it honestly felt like a breath of fresh air compared to all the quaint and run down restaurants in the area. They've got so many options too, which is a plus plus times a bagillian in my book. If you're a newbie prepare to stare at the menu and flip page after page and finding yourself torn between 3 different meals. They have sushi, Japanese, Korean, Thai, and a few others to say the least. After an eternity of becoming One with the menu, I finally decided to go for sushi. The big plus is how they were able to make a customized roll for me. I truly appreciated that. My meal came with miso soup. It had a wonderful taste and aroma and the temperature was on point. I also ordered some edamame but it was nothing impressive. For dessert, the fried oreos! Somehow the waitress just knew. By the way, she was phenomenal. She was so attentive and such a kind lady. She made us feel great about our choices and had a positive attitude and great disposition. The prices here are very reasonable in my opinion. Two of us were able to get sushi, edamame, a small side of rice and dessert for about $40 before tip. Considering how everything in Alaska seems to cost an arm and a leg, this seemed pretty reasonable. It's worth checking out. I would even say it might be a nice date spot too :-) Don't let the outside fool you, this restaurant is a real gem and I'll definitely be returning in the near future.....I think I hear the fried Oreos calling my name!.... UPDATE: Since last night's great dinner, I returned this afternoon because I really wanted to try one of their bento boxes. $10.95, yes please! It was terrific and prices just can't be beat. I've got one picture coming up ;-)

For the area, Shine's is a nice Asian fusion restaurant. I don't think their curry is very good, especially compared to a Thai restaurant. I know that Shine's is mainly Japanese food, which they are pretty good at. As for sushi, it's not the freshest compared to the Seattle area and I think they put eel sauces on too many rolls. I'll still stick to their sushi, but ask for no eel sauces on rolls that don't need it (e.g. Spider Roll).

We have gotten take out from here twice now. The first time was pretty good, we got a teriyaki dish and thai drunken noodles. The second time we went with sushi and it was bad. The green dragon roll was dried out and tasted off, like it had been sitting out. The kiss of fire roll was covered in sauce, but underneath the salmon was all the gray fatty layer of the fish. We thought that was really unappetizing and a pretty cheap move. Maybe they thought we wouldn't notice because there was sauce on it. Overall it was pretty disappointing and we probably won't be getting food from here again.

Excellent food. Great customer service and wonderful atmosphere. Our favorite sushi roll is Fusion Unagi and sashimi are the best. Plus when we sit at the bar we always get something special and delicious. I also love fried Oreos. It is my favorite desert. There are very tasty soups on the menu, my favorite is Udon. I also love general Tay chicken. Highly recommend. You will love it!

One of our fave restaurants. The service is always good and the food is fresh and delicious! They always bend over backwards to make you happy. The atmosphere is very trendy, but has a lot of background noise, so if you are hard of hearing this might not be a good fit.

Great food. Been going here for years and I still love it. The food is excellent. I love the shrimp tempura and the teriyaki chicken or beef dinner combos. The staff is extremely friendly and if they know it's a specially occasion like a birthday or anniversary they'll give you a nice dessert for free. Great atmosphere, tasty food, and a very nice staff. One of the best eats in Eagle River

If I could give a zero I would. New owners made a great restaurant poor. I gave the 5 tries and that was 5 too many. My order came out wrong each time and I only order 1 item. In addition they added a lot of fillers that were not on the menu like celery and mushrooms so they could reduce the amount of meat in the dish. Will never go back.

After a long search we finally found a fantastic sushi spot! The best part is their menu has lots of different Japanese, Chinese and Thai choices that we will come here whenever we need a fix anything! The sushi was fresh and delicious. Had gyoza for an app, and it was yummy! The gyoza is steamed, so it's not crispy, but I loved it! Dinner comes with miso soup and their house salad, which I love when a sushi restaurant does that! This will be my #1 spot for all things sushi! Will review again when I try their other specialties!

I go for the sushi which has always been fresh when I go. Seating is always available. Service is not so friendly or fast so don't go if you're in a hurry. They have a wide variety of Asian food, which is nice for our family because my husband likes Chinese and I can eat sushi. I've always been please with the rolls I get. I have eaten their sashimi and it too is very fresh. Miso soup is good, and the salad dressing on their house salad is yummy.

We had a Combination Plate (short ribs and shrimp tempura) and Mongolian Beef, plus an appetizer. Both were very good, lots of food in the combination plate. Plenty of food with the Mongolian beef as well. Edamame was a bit pricey at $5.50, but the total bill was still under $36. Service wasn't great, but we'll still return.

Shines used to be my go to, favorite spot in Eagle River. I would eat there 2-3 times a week until a few months ago they changed owners and ever since things have gone downhill. I went to dinner last night with a group of 5 including myself. We were the only people in the restaurant at 7:30, the service was okay but the waiter didn't really seem to want to serve us. The food was surprisingly good compared to the last few times I've been there and everything seemed to be going smoothly until the checks came. Like I said we were the only 5 people in there and we got auto gratuitied 18%! After we paid (it was 8:20) they turned off the music and the open signs/beer signs, locked the door and dimmed the lights. We assumed they closed at 8:30 so we got moving, only to have the sign on the door read 10:30 pm. As we were walking out a family was trying to walk in and they kept the doors locked. Really Shines?! I miss the old owners, they were so kind. Oh well.

Really great upgrade from the old location. I hesitate to write a review because it was already busy when we stopped in for dinner and I don't want everyone to go there! Let's keep it our secret. First off, the decor. Haven't seen many restaurants in AK (maybe none) that look like they've been professionally decorated (except for the 80s looking chandeliers?). It's like you've entered a strip mall in Eagle River and were immediately transported somewhere trendy, surely not AK. We were seated promptly by friendly staff and our food came out quickly even though they were fairly busy. The sushi bar is pretty large and there were at least 2 sushi makers there, which is more than I can say for some places. I didn't get any sushi this time but the plates I saw come out of there were beautiful. Hubby and I had salmon teriyaki and oyako don buri and our bill was less than $30. The food was delicious and of course comes with miso soup and a salad. Looks like they may have expanded the menu as well. I can't wait to go back!

I used to avoid this place like the bubonic plaque. The service and food sucked. But they've moved, and its much better. I was here for lunch, and its a pretty decent bento box with a lot of choices. The rest of the menu looked pretty good, so I'll be back to try dinner sometime. The service was great, the food was hot and tasty, and as a plus, no stomach problems later. Lets do an update. I was impressed three months ago, came back, and they're sucking big time again. The food is average, but their biggest problem is back, and with a vengeance...their staff. We walked in, waited 15 minutes while the staff stood around ignoring us. A 14 year old? Seated us, but we noticed she sat others at dirty tables. It took another 15 to get menus, 20 minutes for one of two entrees to arrive before the appetizers. Then the other entree. We ordered a beer, it sat on the bar for 15 minutes while the waiter played with himself. This is a perfect place for a dine and dash since they don't appear to give a rats ass. We stayed, paid, and won't be back. Hey shines- you can't rest on opening laurels forever.there are so many other sushi spots in anchorage. Even if its 10-20 miles from eagle river, its worth it.

My initial optimism proved correct. The service has improved immensely. I've become a loyal patron, visiting the Bistro at least a few times a month. If you love sushi, try Shine's Asian Fusion Bistro!
